Types of Vacuum Cleaners

Vacuum bags

Bagged

Bag vacuum cleaners collect dust and dirt in textile or paper bags. It captures hair, animal hair and other rough dirt well, so these vacuum cleaners do not require frequent cleaning of the filter. In general, bags that need to be changed over time are better than those that just need to be emptied.

  • Higher vacuuming efficiency, the bag functions as another filter and does not need to be changed after each vacuuming.
  • As the bag fills with debris, the suction power of the vacuum cleaner decreases, and new bags will need to be bought.

Bagless vacuum cleaners

Bagless

Dust and other dirst are sucked up and, thanks to a high centrifugal force, are stored in a special container which needs to be emptied after vacuuming. These vacuum cleaners are not ideal for allergy sufferers.

  • No need to buy bags, no dust, constant suction power.
  • Poor filtration, requires more frequent maintenance of the container and filters.

Upright vacuum cleaners

Upright

Thanks to its slender and compact design, upright vacuum cleaners are ideal for cleaning smaller areas and difficult to reach places. Models with a built-in battery can also be used outside the reach of an electrical outlet. Simplicity of control is also an advantage. These can often be purchased in combination with a handheld vacuum cleaner. There are baggedand bagless variants of upright vacuum cleaners.

  • Compact and lightweight design, simple handling, battery powered.
  • Lower vacuum output compared to conventional floor vacuum cleaners.

Handheld vacuum cleaners

Handheld

These are small in size and light in weight. They are ideal for cleaning the car or somewhere without an electrical outlet. Some models are powered via cable (230V or 12V sockets), but most handheld vacuum cleaners are equipped with a battery. Durability ranges from 8 to 20 minutes, and some models can work longer.

  • Lightweight and highly compact, rechargeable battery.
  • Lower performance.

Robotic vacuum cleaners

Robotic

Robotic vacuum cleaners clean by themselves, without any need for oversight. They are better suited for smooth floors than for high carpets. They move around the room with infrared sensors that scan the surroundings of the vacuum cleaner. More expensive robotic vacuum cleaner models are equipped with sensors for detecting dirt and collisions.

  • No worries about vacuuming, saving time with cleaning.
  • Higher purchase price, lower volume of dust container.

Multifunction multipurpose vacuum cleaner

Multipurpose

Multi-purpose vacuum cleaners can handle both dry dirt and dust, as well as liquids, not only from hard floors but also from carpets. Some models of multipurpose vacuum cleaners also offer window cleaning, deep carpet or upholstery and steam cleaning. These are suitable for households, garages, workshops or terraces.

  • Wet and dry vacuuming.
  • Greater dimensions and weight, more demanding maintenance.

Ash Vacuum Cleaner

Ash Vacuum Cleaners

You can use the ash vacuum cleaners in a household with a fireplace or stove, but also in the garden or cottage where grilling happens frequently. They can also handle light amounts of dirt in the garden and workshop, such as fine sawdust, sand or dust. Generally, ash extractors have the largest container volume and, like other types of vacuum cleaners, use HEPA filters.

  • Lower price models can also collect hot and warm ash.
  • Shorter nozzle.

Important Parameters to Consider When Choosing a Vacuum Cleaner

Power consumption and suction power of the vacuum cleaner

  • Power consumption - indicates the amount of energy the vacuum cleaner uses, usually 1500W or more.
  • Suction power - not always given due to inconsistent measurement, usually corresponds to 1/5-1/3 power.
  • Some vacuum cleaners come with power control.

Volume of Bag or Container

It's different for each type of vacuum cleaner, but in general, a larger volume for the dust container allows you the luxury of cleaning longer without interruption to empty the container or replace the bag. Refer to the table for the recommended volume ratio of the bag to the vacuumed area. For bagless vacuum cleaners, the container volume is 1.2 to 2 liters.

Size of area to be vacuumedVolume of bag
up to 50m22 to 2.5l
50 to 150m23 to 4l
over 150m24l or more

The working radius depends on the length of the cable. The longer the cable, the less you have to change the sockets. The length is usually between 5 and 15m.

Filter Type

Filtration quality affects overall vacuum efficiency. There is no exception that all vacuum cleaners use a multistage filtration system. We recommend selecting certified HEPA filters that are made of glass fiber and are generally more effective and more durable than fabric microfilters.

  • Microfilter - A basic type of filter that is made from fabric or foam.
  • Washable filter - it can be washed repeatedly, so there is no need to buy a new one.
  • Water filtration - the soaked dirt is trapped in the water in the vacuum cleaner reservoir. After vacuuming, only empty water and wash the container.
  • HEPA and EPA filters - these certified filters developed by NASA. Vacuum cleaners use EPA filters 10 to 12 and HEPA 13 and 14. The higher the number, the higher the filtration stage. For allergy sufferers, we recommend HEPA 13 and higher, which can capture up to 99.9% of bacteria.

Noise Level

The sound pressure level, or the amount of noise the vacuum cleaner makes, has a large effect on the comfort of work. The quietest vacuum cleaners produce noise levels around 60 dB, which is comparable to human conversation. The noise of the loudest is more than 85 dB. The quietest variety are robotic vacuum cleaners.

Additional Vacuum Cleaner Attachments

  • Brush attachment - Suitable for thorough cleaning of carpets.
  • Slot nozzle - for cleaning poorly accessible and tight places
  • Upholstery pad - effective for cleaning car seats, sofas and other upholstered furniture.
  • Turbo brush - a brush powered by intake air, perfectly captures animal hair and dirt in the carpet.
  • Electric turbocharger - similar to the principle of an air turbocharger, but has its own engine, therefore it rotates at a constant speed and with greater force. The vacuum cleaner is connected by a cable.
